Overview

What to know about Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, usually between 17 and 25. Many people have no room for them, so they come in at an angle or stay partly under the gum (impacted).

Not every wisdom tooth needs removing. Extraction is usually advised when there is repeated infection, decay, damage to the tooth in front, or a cyst.

A simple extraction is quick. An impacted tooth needs a minor surgical procedure, which an oral surgeon or experienced dentist performs, sometimes with sedation.

FAQ

Common questions

How painful is wisdom tooth removal?

The procedure itself is numbed. Afterwards, soreness and swelling are normal for a few days and are usually controlled with painkillers your dentist recommends.

What is a dry socket?

A painful condition when the blood clot is lost from the socket. Avoid smoking, straws and vigorous rinsing for the first few days to reduce the risk.

Should all four wisdom teeth be removed at once?

Sometimes it is convenient, particularly under sedation. Your dentist will advise based on which teeth are causing problems.
